O'Grady was born in Wheaton, Illinois and attended the Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) and Jim O'Grady. The family was raised by her parents in Wheaton (Illinois) where she graduated in 1981 from the North High School in Wheaton. Models appeared in commercials for a while before moving out in Los Angeles. O'Grady's first job was to model as a model for Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She made her debut on screen in 1988, in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then offered an actress in the recurring role of ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition, she has guest-starred and appeared on independent movies and television shows. Her first big role was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC crime show NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the large-haired squad secretary from 1993 until 1996. Each year received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in Drama Series.
