Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, her grandmother, and godparents. Her father abandoned her family. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder that was rooted in words as a young child. Ford was first fascinated by acting when she was a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of weeks, she realized the school was not for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure an acceptance on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford did not graduate in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her debut on television in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. During the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. The regular theatre work she performed led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. However, Tate soon began to garner recognition for her stand-up comedic performances, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
